Volume 39 recap

I now proceed to condense volume 39 of The Ravages of Time.

• Chapter 310: Sun Ce suffers the effects of the poison, still longing for his father.
• Chapter 311: Guo Jia arranges for the death of Liu Bei’s son to prevent Guan Yu’s return to Liu Bei.
• Chapter 312: Yan Liang assaults Baima.
• Chapter 313: Yan Liang kills Song Xian and Wei Xu.
• Chapter 314: Liu Bei stops the Yuan army archers from firing upon seeing Guan Yu.
• Chapter 315: Guan Yu slays Yan Liang in battle.
• Chapter 316: Sun Ce and Yu Ji pass away.

This volume basically features Sun Ce’s last hundred days of pain (as well as Yu Ji’s eventual death), while also shifting attention back to the schemes in the first major phase (the battle in Baima and the demise of Yan Liang) of the larger conflict between Cao Cao and Yuan Shao. Liu Bei and Guan Yu receive special attention, as Guo Jia attempts to take advantage of both Liu Bei’s sense of brotherhood and Guan Yu’s sense of honor. Sima Yi and Liaoyuan Huo hardly appear in this part of the story. Lü Meng transitions from a foul-mouthed commander to a scholarly general, while Sun Jian is remembered in visions and dreams.
